How Titleist names its drivers

The model name on a listing is most of the specification. This is what each part of it means.

Before you buy

Forgiving and light are not the same thing. If a 2-series is the only thing available it is perfectly playable, but check the shaft weight before you commit.

The one line that is right for most seniors has carried three names, TSi1, then TSR1, now GT1. Take the 12 degree head if you find one, because the light builds run low on spin and 9 or 10 degrees costs carry you cannot spare. It is scarce in a soft flex, and worth both holding out for and paying a little more for.

Older Titleist is worth understanding rather than skipping. The 910, 913 and 915 heads and the early TS models turn up often and cheaply, and a 913 D2 is closer to what you want than a 913 D3. They are large and perfectly playable. The modern heads are faster; they are not more forgiving.

Titleist builds for better players and it shows on the used market: more of what you will see in a soft flex is the wrong club for a slower swing than at any other maker here. Patience beats settling on this page more than on any other brand page.

Titleist model names and what they mean

1	The light build, lightened through the head, the shaft and the grip together rather than just the shaft. Sold as TSi1, then TSR1, now GT1.
2	The forgiving one, built around 40 grams heavier than the 1-series. Playable, but a great deal of club to swing if your speed has dropped.
3 and 4	Lower-spin heads for better players, and not for most seniors.
D2 and D3	The older naming on the 910, 913 and 915 heads: the D2 was the forgiving head and the D3 the lower-spin one.
